In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the eyes are regarded as an important window into a person’s overall health and well-being because is linked to the Liver and Kidney meridians. The Liver is associated with the health of the eyes, and the Kidneys are believed to nourish the eyes.
TCM practitioners examine a person’s eyes, along with other signs and symptoms, to assess internal organ health, energy balance, and potential imbalances in the body. The eyes are thought to reflect a person’s “Shen,” or spirit, or vitality.
Bright and clear eyes are considered a sign of good Shen, indicating a strong and balanced state of health. Dull, cloudy, or lifeless eyes may indicate an imbalance or health problem.
Dark circles or puffiness around the eyes may indicate imbalances in the Kidneys or Spleen, poor sleep, or excessive stress.
Redness or Dryness: Redness, dryness, or irritation in the eyes can be associated with Liver heat or imbalances in the body’s Yin and Yang.
