Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
About TCM Consultation
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) finds its roots in the rich tapestry of China’s medical history. While some view it as an alternative medical practice, its origins are deeply intertwined with various health practices, beliefs, and philosophies from ancient China. These include herbal remedies, dietary practices, specialized medical techniques, and foundational theories from esteemed texts like the “Huangdi Neijing” (The Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor) and the “Compendium of Materia Medica,” a comprehensive work from the 16th century.
In the early 20th century, as China underwent modernization, there was a push to phase out traditional practices deemed outdated. However, proponents of TCM curated and organized its core elements, giving birth to what we now recognize as “Chinese medicine” or “Zhongyi 中医” In 1950s, we saw the Chinese government advocating for a blend of Western and Chinese medical practices. By the 1960s, TCM gained prominence as an affordable and widely accepted form of healthcare.
The latter part of the 20th century, especially after 1972, marked a surge in the West’s interest in TCM. Today, TCM encompasses a holistic approach to health, offering treatments like herbal medicine, acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, massage (tui na), exercise (qigong), and dietary advice.
